โ˜… Welcome & safety brief

Welcome to the Sunset Duckies Cup! ๐Ÿฆ†๐ŸŒ…

Read aloud at 13:30 โ€” gather everyone on the sand ยท ~3 minutes ยท loud, warm, no rushing the safety bits.

"Ducklings, parents, friends โ€” welcome to the very first Sunset Duckies Cup! Before we paddle out, gather in, listen up โ€” a few important things, then we surf."

๐ŸŽ‰ First competition we've ever run

This is the first comp the club has ever organised โ€” bear with us if the running order wobbles a little. The waves call the shots, not the schedule. Be patient, be loud for every kid, and we'll all have a great afternoon.

๐Ÿงญ Where to find things

๐Ÿ” Food & water

On the tables โ€” help yourselves any time. The BBQ is going all afternoon: sausages, baguettes, fruit. Drink water, it's a long day in the sun.

๐Ÿ•’ Timetable

Pinned at the registration desk and on the heat board. If you're not sure when your kid is up โ€” check the board first, then ask a helper.

๐Ÿฆ† Helpers in Duckies shirts

Anyone in a Sunset Duckies shirt is a helper. Lost? Confused? Need a leash, a snack, a band-aid? Stop one and ask.

๐Ÿฉน First aid

First-aid kit is at the registration desk and a trained adult is on site all afternoon. Grazes, jellyfish, wax-in-eye โ€” find a helper immediately.

๐Ÿšฉ Water safety โ€” listen carefully

These rules exist so no one gets hurt. They're not negotiable โ€” if a helper or the head judge calls you back, come back, no arguments.

1
YOU MUST surf WITHIN the poles.
Two flags / poles mark the competition zone. Stay between them. That's where the judges can see you and where we can keep you safe.
2
YOU CANNOT go OUTSIDE the poles.
If you drift past a pole โ€” paddle around the outside and re-enter from behind. Never cut back through the line-up โ€” that's how boards meet heads. Always paddle around.
3
ONE SURFER PER WAVE. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿšซ
If someone is already up and riding, the wave is theirs. Don't drop in. Wait, smile, take the next one โ€” there are plenty of waves.
4
Leash on. Helmet if you have one. Sunscreen on.
Board hits hurt. A leash keeps your board with you, not flying into someone else.

โฑ๏ธ How a heat runs

We'll call every step from the beach with the mic โ€” you don't have to remember the clock, just listen.

2 min before
๐ŸŒŠ Warm-up call
"Heat ___ โ€” paddle out, warm up, find your spot."
0:00
๐ŸŸข Heat STARTS
"Your ten minutes start NOW!"
3 min to go
๐ŸŸก 3-min warning
"Three minutes left โ€” still time for one more!"
10:00
๐Ÿ”ด Heat STOPS
"Time! Paddle in โ€” well done!" Catch the wave you're on, then come in.

Heats are 10 minutes. When time's up, finish the wave you're on if you're already riding it โ€” then paddle straight in. Don't start a new wave after the horn.

๐Ÿ… Judging โ€” only your TOP 2 waves count

Catch as many waves as you want โ€” but at the end of the heat only your best 2 waves go toward your score. That means it's better to commit hard to a few good ones than to flap on every ripple. Pick your wave, paddle with everything, stand tall.

Each wave is scored on 5 simple things โ€” the judge ticks a box for each one you nail. Max 5 ticks per wave, max 10 across your best 2.

๐ŸŠ Paddle & commit
You went for the wave with everything โ€” no hesitation, head down, full strokes.
๐Ÿš€ Pop-up
Clean push to your feet โ€” hands on the board, jump up, no knees first.
๐Ÿง˜ Stance
Feet apart, knees bent, eyes up the wave โ€” like your coach showed you.
๐ŸŒŠ Ride
You stayed up and rode the wave โ€” even a few seconds counts. Longer = better.
๐ŸŽ‰ Stoke
Big smile, claim it, kick out with style. Energy in the water matters!

๐Ÿ“ฃ One last thing โ€” cheer for EVERYONE

Parents, friends, fellow ducklings โ€” cheer for every kid, not just yours. The kid who falls hardest gets the loudest cheer. The kid who's scared and paddles out anyway is a hero. That's the Duckies way.

"Any questions? No? Then let's surf the first ever Sunset Duckies Cup! ๐Ÿค™"
