Dawn patrol: the parents at Le Morne

One Sunday in July the parents drove south early, paddled out under the mountain and put a drone up. The Duckies had the beach. Everyone came home happy.

Sunset Duckies is a club for kids. It is also, quietly, a club for their parents — the ones who stand in the whitewater every Monday and Friday and never get a wave of their own.

So on 12 July a handful of them left Tamarin early, parked under Le Morne Brabant and paddled out before the wind.

Under the mountain

Glassy, green and a little bigger than it looked from the beach. Long lefts peeling over the reef with the mountain filling the sky behind — the wave the reef tour showed the Duckies from a boat in June.

The drone's view

A DJI over the lineup at 4K: Arjon, David, Teo and Andras each got a wave on camera. The best frames are on the gallery page and the clips will show up on Instagram in the run-up to the Cup.

Meanwhile, on the beach

Bron had the Duckies on the sand — a beach that looks, from above, like a postcard nobody would believe. Sandcastles and an empty lagoon while the parents surfed.

Why it matters

The grey goose heat at Cup Vol. 02 is one heat for the parents, same rules, same judges. Consider this the training log. Bring your best Le Morne wave to Tamarin on 16 October.

Back in Tamarin with sand in the car and Duckies asking when it is their turn. Soon.
